| About Our Course: Country Meadows Golf course, located in Escanaba, MI. was established by Leo and Olga Degrand in 1982. The course once a farm, was designed and constructed by Leo Degrand and Aaron Johnson. Johnson and DeGrand were both employee's of P&H at the time the idea to build the public 9 hole course was concieved. Construction began around 1974 and was completed in the summer of 1981. The course earned it's first dollar in the spring of "82". The golf course consisted of "push up" style greens, and field grass fairways. The layout was fairly open and no sand traps were constructed in the early years.
In 1990, Country Meadows began it's transformation from a farm course to a well groomed "modern" course. Under the direction of Leo Degrand and Superintendant Tom Dunleavy, Six new greens were constructed between 1990 and 1999. New larger tee offs were built and several new pieces of equipment were purchased to care for the course. Several water hazards, 125 trees and 24 sand traps were added to provide for a greater challenge. A grounds staff of 5 were hired in the early 90's and the staffing levels have remained stable since.
Owner, Founder and designer Leo Degrand Passed away in December of 2002 at the age of 81. His hardwork and vision was the driving force behind Country Meadows and his impact can be seen in nearly every part of the course. Leo will be greatly missed by his family, friends and employees. Leo's Grandson Tom Dunleavy has taken over the role of General Manager along with his duties as Superintendant. Tom has been with Country Meadows since 1986.
